ENEA

ENEA (Ente per le Nuove Tecnologie, l’Energia e l’Ambiente) is a governmental research Agency operating in the fields of energy, the environment and new technologies, to support competitiveness and sustainable development.

ENEA HPC resources are integrated in the ENEA-GRID infrastructure. Activities are carried out in 12 locations in Northern, Central and Southern Italy, hosting resources for serial and parallel computing, advanced graphical post processing, data storage, remote operation of scientific instruments. ENEA-GRID infrastructure allows access to all these resources as a single virtual system, with an integrated computational power of about 3 TFlops, provided by several multiplatform systems (AIX/IBM SP, Linux x86/IA64/x86_64, IRIX/SGI).

Through the new project CRESCO a new important supercomputing facility is currently being set up in Portici (Naples). The facility will host a new Linux 2.500 CPUs machine.

ENEA participated in the EGEE/EGEE-II projects focusing its activity on providing access to non-standard platforms, as AIX, by means of the “gateway” approach which has been presented at recent EGEE conferences (2005, 2006). The approach provides a flexible and affordable solution for grid interoperability.

ENEA will contribute to the IGI JRU with its production Grid, that will in a short time consist of over 3.000 CPUs and 150 TB of disk space deployed on 6 sites. An average 10% fraction of these resources will be dedicated to computing activities related to projects carried out with the IGI JRU and, in particular, to EGEE-III.

ENEA will contribute its experience and know how in the management of a production Grid, and in the development and management of interoperability systems among Grids.
