The "Dipartimento di Informatica” (UniPmn), in Alessandria, includes 15 professors and researchers. The computer scientists at the University of Piemonte Orientale have long research traditions in different fields of Artificial Intelligence. Particularly active is the Machine Learning group, which contributed both methodological results and working systems, applied to several industrial applications. In the recent years, the research direction was more and more oriented toward Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases, mainly under the pressure of increasing application needs by the part of industrial users.

The Machine Learning group participated to the European projects Blearn I and II (BRA 7274), which aimed at investigating the applicability of Machine Learning techniques to industrial robots, and to the BRA ILP II. It was a partner of the Network of Excellence for Machine Learning and Related Fields and of the first Network of Excellence in KDD (KDNet) and a partner in the Mining Mart project.

The University is a main node of the UE CA KDUbiq, whose main topic if research on Data Mining on the Grid. The University is in charge of editing a BluePrint for the field.
